In this edition of Coastal Classical Music, host George Cady previews the Brookings-Harbor Friends of Music concert of September 18, 2016. This, the first concert of Friends of Music’s 32rd season, features ZOFO, a four-hand piano duo. The four hands belong to internationally acclaimed solo pianists Eva-Maria Zimmerman and Keisuke Nakagoshi, who have thrilled audiences around the world with their outside-the-box piano artistry.
The concert will feature four composers (Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, and Harold Shapero) who knew each other, learned from each other, wrote music for four-hands piano, and at times, “shared the bench” or used the genre to explore larger symphonic forms.
ZOFO has previously recorded the same program in an album that received a Grammy nomination for best performance by a small chamber music ensemble. The program concludes with a stirring rendition of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in its original four-hand version.
