Discussion at Brookings Café is a potpourri of topics around a table where anybody can join in the discussion. This show represents a place where the community of Brookings and the surrounding areas can discuss what concerns us as coastal residents.

What if you just escaped a fire at your house and you sit in your car with only the clothes on your back as you watch your entire neighborhood go up in flames. Where to go for help? Where are you going to stay? Now imagine that you tune your car radio to KCIW where the Brookings Emergency Operations Center has taken over our radio transmitter and is broadcasting information that will guide you to help and safety.

KCIW is putting the finishing touches on a system that will allow the City of Brookings to take over the KCIW transmitter in times of an emergency such as a major fire like the one that destroyed Paradise, California, or, God forbid … “The Big One.”

In this discussion we talk with three survivors from the Paradise fire. We hear their stories about a fire that destroyed their homes in hopes that we in Brookings might learn something to help protect us. Please welcome Erick Sill, his wife Karen Brown, and Yvette Streeter.
