This week, the Curry Café panel tackles the serious and distressing subject of domestic abuse. Producer and host, Ray Gary, was fortunate to have three guests with extensive experience in dealing with this subject: Troy Lea, a KCIW volunteer and member of Crescent City’s LGBTQ+ Community, who volunteers his time to assist domestic abuse survivors with hair and makeup makeovers; Natasha Monet, who runs the Harrington House in Crescent City, a domestic abuse shelter; Cheri Salter, who is currently working toward opening a shelter in the Brookings/Harbor area called “Ruth’s Eye of the Storm”.

The discussion covers definitions of domestic abuse, statistics on its prevalence in different communities (including the LGBTQ+ community), and the various forms it takes (physical, sexual, emotional, financial, etc.). The Panelists address common misconceptions surrounding domestic violence, such as why victims stay, and explore the importance of community support, resources, and prevention, emphasizing the challenges faced by survivors, including navigating the legal system and accessing services in rural areas.

We encourage anyone with differing views to participate in future Curry Café discussions. If you’re interested in joining the panel, email contact@kciw.org or call 541-661-4098.
