Curry Coast Community Radio’s inaugural Texas Hold’em Tournament fundraiser took place at High Noon Saturday, October 10, at the Brookings’ Elks Lodge. The event was a huge success with nearly fifty players joining KCIW’s cadre of volunteers to help support Curry Coast Community Radio’s fundraising campaign.

In this program tournament organizer Skip Hunter talks with Danny Mitani who took home the first place trophy and Terry Bowers who garnered the trophy for second place.

The Poker Tournament was the brain-child of the station’s marketing, programming, and development committees. “We are no longer selling the idea of a radio station, we have built the station’s organizational structure. We are producing a wide variety of excellent work product from arts and culture programming to community-building news programming,” said tournament organizer Skip Hunter.

“First we had to develop the committee structure, then we had to develop the programming that would be supported by the proceeds of the tournament, and then we had to develop and coordinate the tournament with the [Oregon] Department of Justice requirements,” Hunter elaborated.

The tournament, which lasted over five hours from start to finish, began with Mayor Ron Hedenskog stopping by to kick-off the event. Poker players competed for a total prize pool of $2,400 in gift cards from our Brookings Fred Meyer store. The players were treated to Italian cuisine lunch (kitchen crew captain was Jim Newman of Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America) and were automatically entered into prize drawings for gift certificates from local businesses including Barron’s Home Furnishings, Vista Pub, Wild River Pizza, and tickets to the Brookings Fire Department’s “Taco Feed and Fundraiser.”

The tournament “livened up” as the friendly competition began to reduce the number of players until the final table’s top ten players remained. The final table of ten players included Richard Donald, Mike Cornelius, Ruby Bryson, Desi Robinson, Nicole Stephens, Danny Mitani, Jim Bowers, Vidal Soberon and Teri Stilt.

After competing for forty-five minutes, the final table was reduced to eight players, who voted to “chop the pot” — split the $2,400 prize pool equally among themselves and continue to play for the first and second place trophies. Demonstrating the spirit of the event, the final eight players also voted to contribute an extra donation to the poker tournament’s proceeds at $50 each for a total of $400.

KCIW plans to hold this fundraising event quarterly with the next event planned for early February, 2016.  KCIW is also considering providing Texas Hold’em poker classes for those players who would like to learn new skills.
