This is the end of Book One of Nine O’Clock Horses, written and read by Angela Ewing.

You have heard about an average English family and their struggles to maintain normalcy in a world where there may be no tomorrow; a world of food rationing, bombs dropped without warning in the dead of night, relatives and friends suddenly missing, found in the rubble left behind. Anguish brought upon by an enemy they cannot see. Through the eyes of our protagonist, Amelia Norton, a child born into this chaos, we catch a glimpse of her own family and the inner turmoil they face surviving WWII.

Please listen next time to Episode 13 of Nine O’Clock Horses on KCIW, Curry Coast Community Radio, to find out how Amelia will fare in America.

Story Time: Nine O’Clock Horses, Episode 5

Dear Listener:

On behalf of KCIW, Curry Coast Community Radio, I hope you have enjoyed the first four episodes of my story, ‘Nine O’Clock Horses’ – serialized each week on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. on  Story Time – KCIW.org.

This has been difficult to write. My other stories are filled with characters from my own imagination, where freedom prevails to let me enter a glorious world of fiction; the players in this story are members of my family.

There is a loneliness writing one’s own story, but like a film that suddenly comes into focus I see my past more clearly now I’m older. Now, it makes me wonder if I have a story to tell anyway, at least one that will hold the listener spell-bound. When I hear of other people’s journey through life it seems to me they have led an enviable existence where calmness prevails and normality reigns. The undulating paths they have taken seem to lead to the betterment of their existence, even after flurries of anxiety. But perhaps because of my childhood during WWII I am left with demons that even now surprise me with their vividness. Is my story so different just because it is based on my own life? Will you be able to detect the truth from fiction? You, the listener, will decide. And, because of the skeletons that come to life in the passages of time, I have changed the names of my family members and the characters who have played such a large part of my life. But I will hold nothing back. It is for the release of my own guilt … a cathartic journey I must take in order to set me free.

… the story continues. Thank you for listening.

Angela Ewing
