Emergency Preparedness/Response

Community Organizer: The Curry County Medical Reserve Corps

Curry County Medical Reserve CorpsAndy Stubbs, the volunteer Fire Captain at the Brookings Fire Department, talks with Scott Clapson, The Community Organizer, about The Curry County Medical Reserve Corps. During a natural disaster or other catastrophes medical facilities and healthcare professionals become overwhelmed in the area where the catastrophe occurs. The Medical Reserve Corps is a national registry of healthcare and emergency service professionals that was implemented after 9-11 to prepare and register these professionals so that in the event of a disaster it is easier to identify and organize people that can help.

Curry Community HealthAndy and Scott talk about the future Cascasdia Subduction Zone earthquake and the huge tsunami that will follow, and how we can prepare for this and other events.

As Andy points out during the interview, it’s one step at a time. Taking on disaster preparedness can be a daunting and scary process for some people. It doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of resources and people who are willing to help you prepare to protect yourself and your family. It all starts with education and being open to learning what we each can do to prepare. By everyone doing their part we will all better prepared.

Thank you to Andy Stubbs, The Medical Reserve Corps, and Curry Community Health for helping provide this excellent necessary program.
