The Brookings Harbor Community Helpers Emergency Food Bank serves a growing portion of our population each year. This growth in clientele requires innovation and creativity. Started in 2013, this amazing garden at the Food Bank is a true community effort.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers. Next time you are planting vegetables, plant a row or two for the Food Bank.

The Community Helpers Emergency Food Bank is located at 539 Hemlock St. in Brooking, Oregon. Hours are Monday – Friday, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

Marihelen and Michael share how they became volunteers for the Kite Festival and how a group of local volunteers took over the festival a few years ago and turned it into a nonprofit organization.

The weekend kicks off on Friday, July 17th, with an indoor kite flying exhibition in the Brookings Harbor-High School gymnasium and then continues with two days of exhibition kite flying at the Port of Brookings-Harbor on Saturday and Sunday. Kids get to make kites and fly them, there’s great music to accompany the kite flying, and lots of beautiful huge kites. Definitely worth going to this awesome event.

Did you know that Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in America? And did you know that the Brookings-Harbor area is poised to become a disc golf Mecca.

Southern Oregon Disc Golf AssociationIn this edition of Community Organizer Shane Stephens and Ian Hannum from The Southern Oregon Disc Golf Association talk with Scott Clapson about the growing disc golf community on the Wild Rivers Coast. They talk about the fun, recreation, and community building this sport provides and the three new courses in our area at McVay Rock State Park, Azalea Park, and Salmon Run Golf Course.

The Southern Oregon Disc Golf Association is a non-profit organization started in 2014. Based in Brookings, Oregon, their goal is to help build disc golf courses through direct action and to educate those new to the sport in the Southern Oregon/Northern California area. They’re able to do these things thanks to the generous support of the City of Brookings, local businesses and private individuals.

In this edition of Community Organizer, Roger Gilbert, one of the founders of the Community Kitchens in Brookings, Oregon, talks with community organizer Scott Clapson about this seven-day-a-week nutritious free meal network.

Community KitchensRoger and Scott talk about how this program relies on the generous support of local volunteers and donations of food and money from the community, and how the Community Kitchens aren’t soup kitchens, but a community coming together to provide those in need with nutritions complete meals in a positive, welcoming, environment.

We’re lucky to have a community with so many people willing come together to provide full meals every day of the week. Thank you to all of the Community Kitchen volunteers and the churches that host the spaces. We appreciate you all.

Time Out for Me is a free social day program for people living at home who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The goal of the program is to provide caregivers time to work, take care of their households, and have a break from their caregiver duties. Family caregivers enjoy time to themselves or to run errands knowing that their loved one is safe and cared for by a dedicated staff and volunteers.

Ardy and Scott discuss the importance of a day off for family caregivers and the activities offered during the Monday respite program.

The Time Out for Me program is funded by a grant from the Older Americans Act.

But why does the waving man wave? What’s he like when he’s not spreading positive energy to passersby on the highway? You can find out in this edition of Community Organizer.
