Discussion at Brookings Café: What is Real News?

Discussion at Brookings Café is a potpourri of topics around a table where anybody can join in the discussion. This show represents a place where the community of Brookings and the surrounding areas can discuss what concerns us as coastal residents.

We have all heard about “fake news.” So then, what is real news? Where do you go to find out what is really happening? When the earthquake hits, where are you going to turn to get the information you need? Today, homegrown news sources are everywhere with theories of why the world is so crazy. The scary part is that “the news” seems to be tailoring itself to what you want to hear. You could easily find yourself living in a bubble of the news you want to hear. Meanwhile, the rest of the world goes on without you. So … the question is what is real news?

We have hosted a discussion on gender relations with women only … with men only … and now men and women at the same table … oh my … how will we survive? Here’s a look at how men and women see the topic of gender relations when both are sitting at the same table and forced to interact with each other. Turns out to be rather sweet.

On January 14, 2018 a women’s discussion started on the Discussion at Brookings Café. The gist of the discussion was that women are tired of men being bullies. They want to be treated as equals and respected as fellow human beings. Now men have come to the table to speak to this issue. How badly will they put their feet into their mouths. Or will they surprise you with what they think?

Net neutrality. You’ve heard the term, but what does that mean to you? Does it mean you will have to pay more to get what you want on the internet? Does it mean you may not even be able to get what you want on the internet? Is it a question of free speech? What is Title 2, and is the battle really about money and who is going to gain from doing away with net neutrality?

Discussion at Brookings Café: School Shootings

Discussion at Brookings Café is a potpourri of topics around a table where anybody can join in the discussion. This show represents a place where the community of Brookings and the surrounding areas can discuss what concerns us as coastal residents.

Yet another school shooting. It happens so regularly now that it is more than scary, it’s horrifying. What can we do? We feel that we are powerless to do anything at all. But that’s not an answer. Do we ban assault-style rifles? Do we put armed guards in schools? Do we need an Education Security Administration? Or is the problem much deeper than that? This discussion includes two high school students.

We are living in a time when people are redefining gender relations. Are you a “me too?” Are you hiding under your hat because you fit that profile of men or women that is a little more outside the box from what your mother taught you? The questions to be answered are not as simple as you might think. Here is a discussion that dives straight into a difficult topic … gender relations, just in time for the New Year.

Granted it was a tiny little car that I couldn’t fit in but, it was the thought that counts. Got a favorite recipe? I like rum balls; they are so easy even I can make them. That’s the topic for the discussion at Brookings Café.
